Wooden house of Minahasa an earthquake resistant construction

An earthquake resistant house designs have been a compulsory construction for home owners living in the ring of fire areas such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philipine and Japan. Just building a concrete houses will not be enough. Architects who design earthquake resistant houses must add steel frames inside the concrete beam and columns to reinforce them. A building information modeling software such as Archicad and Revit must equip themselves with structural analysis features. So far, only Revit from Autodesk that has got the structural features which can help architects design and analyze the structure of buildings.

archicad-wooden-house-1.jpg

For traditional wooden houses, the material which is mostly used is of course the wood. Wood if well preserved and dried is one of the best construction materials for houses.

In Minahasa of North Sulawesi, people build houses mainly from wood. Minahasa is a region in northern part of Sulawesi island. There are a number of active volcanoes which often erupt and cause earthquakes. So, the house construction there is mostly made from wood.

The kinds of wood which Minahasan people use are coconut, lingua, cempaka and sometimes besi or merbau. Old coconut tree which is not productive anymore in producing palm oil will then be cut and converted into home building material.

The wooden house of Minahasa looks beautiful in terms of their architecture. Architecture is the art and science of buildings. Although the traditional builders of Minahasan wooden houses have never taken any formal education, their designs are really environmentally friendly and united with the nature. Tourists who visit Minahasa often buy these wooden houses in Woloan village. This village has exported their knock down wooden houses to many countries around the world.

Wooden house can be one of the best home materials due to its earthquake resistant properties but it is not fire resistant. To minimize the risk of burning, architects must apply new design approach to their wooden house by applying fire resistant materials to some parts of the house. This can include fire resistant drapes and wall paper, as well as kitchen room made of ceramic materials.

When the new approach has been applied to the design of an earthquake resistant Minahasan house, it will be able to enter wider market of worldwide wooden house trade. I hope. by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia, blog directory

Dimensioning of Round Wall in Archicad of Graphisoft

After designing the round wall in Archicad, now you can continue by applying dimension to each segment of the round wall and windows. To apply dimension, click the dimension tool in the tool box of your Archicad program. Then, click each point of the wall segment, from the left most point of the wall to the first window, then from the next point of the window to the next point of the window. Continue clicking the segment until you arrived on the end point which is the right most point of the round wall. The points of dimension that you click on the round wall should look like the following picture.

archicad-round-wall-dimension-1.jpg

After that, double click the right most point or the end of the round wall and bring the cursor to the outer side of the building or the house. You will see a symbol of hammer shown up to you. Click there and you will see that the points which you applied to each segment of the round wall have become the dimension of the round wall.

archicad-round-wall-dimenson-2.jpg

You can do the same to the straight wall or other round wall of a house or a room. Applying dimension to a room is very easy. You only need to click the dimension tool and click the points where you need to know their distance or dimension. Archicad is very powerful building design software. It can help you apply dimension even in three dimensional view of the building. I will explain it to you in my other article about Archicad tutorial. by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia.

Wooden house and alleyway of Kyoto

Japanese have been famous for their house design for years. Whether you are an architect who designs a house by drawing it manually or drafting it with Archicad 12 of Graphisoft, when you design an earthquake resistant house, you need to learn more about Japanese wooden house. The style of the house is simple. Its construction does not have rounded wall. Most of the walls are straight ones with partitions from thick white paper. Temples have rounded or curved roofs. The floor is covered with special mat made of rice straw and dried woven grass called Tatami. When we walk on the Tatami, we will feel that these Tatamis are soft. The tatamis are aligned on an arrangement that forms T joints and not the Cross joints.

wooden-house-kyoto.jpg

If you are interested in learning how Japanese build and arrange their houses, I recommend that you visit Kyoto. It is a traditional city of Japanese empire. NHK, a state owned TV station, frequently aired programs about that city, one of them is about the alleyway of Kyoto. There thousands of alleyways in Kyoto. They are narrow and bring neighbors closer. We cannot drive car through narrow alleyways. If we want to pass through them, we need to walk or ride bicycles.

alleyway-kyoto.jpg

People must respect their neighbors' privacy by not playing music too loud. They have sushi bars and café where neighbors sit together to share stories and experience. I think one day I have to go to Kyoto to see how the style and design of the Japanese wooden house. Besides the wooden house and the alleyway that fascinates me, the public bathroom is also something unique in my own perspective. It is where Japanese take a bath. The public bath is divided into two main rooms, one for men and the other for women.

So, if you plan to go abroad this spring, maybe you can put wooden house and alleyway of Kyoto as your next travel destination. You won't regret if it is your choice. by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua of Indonesia

Designing round wall room with Archicad

Archicad is software which many Architects around the world use to design houses and buildings. It is easy to use and powerful. One of the features which Archicad has for home design is round wall. Classic and contemporary houses have rounded walls.
In this article or Archicad tutorial, I will show you how to design a room that has a round wall at its front. The room that I design is a simple one, not part of a building or a house. It is only used as a study case for the round wall design. OK, the first thing that you need to do is starting the Archicad from your computer. Then, start a new project. After that, make a slab floor with the size of 6 meter x 9 meters. Your Archicad should look like this.
round-wall-1.jpg
After creating the slab floor with the Slab tool provided by Archicad, you can now proceed to designing the walls. The walls from point A to D should be the straight one. Wall AB is shorter than wall CD. When you have finished creating the straight wall of the room, you can continue by clicking the round tool as shown on the following picture. You need to click three points to create the round wall, i.e. points D, E, and A.
round-wall-2.jpg
If you have finished creating the walls, straight and curved ones, you can add door and windows. Click the door and window tools on the left of the Archicad window which is located in the toolbox. The windows which you add to the curved wall will adjust their contour according to the curve form of the wall.
round-wall-3.jpg
Now you have made the simple room of a house which has a round or curve wall at the front including its door and windows. To visualize the room that you have just created, right click your move and select view in 3D. Your designed room should look like the picture below.

How plentyoffish makes money online

20092.JPGThere have been many success stories about bloggers make a lot of money from their blogs or website. One that I think as spectacular is plentyoffish.com. It is a dating service website which receives 13 million visits a day.

The owner or founder of the website is Markus Frind. He developed and launched the website in 2003 as a part time project which he used to study the applicaton of ASP.NET. Now, it is the fifth largest online dating in the world. Plenty of Fish receives millions of visits a day and it continues to grow. Markus Frind is lucky. He can make a lot of money by only providing rooms for people who would like to meet new friends. The plentyoffish community is very active in their interactions to one another and they sometimes hold parties where people can meet directly.

This website is free. Markus Frind gets compensation for his hardwork from ads provided by Google Adsense. Even, he becomes a millionaire just because of Google Adsense.

You can also make money by displaying Google Adsense ads on your blog or website. All you need to do is designing a very good website or blog and signing up to Google Adsense. If your application is approved, you can begin placing ads in your website and blog. I have been placing Google Adsense ads in my English website and Make Money from Home blog since last year. This week, I will get my earnings from Google. It has been the largest income besides my online bookstore Xavierbook. Once you have set your blog up and running, you need to be an active blogger so that every time visitors visit your blog, they will always get new information. Google robot likes active blogs. You don't have to be an expert in html or php. All you need to have is good articles. That's all I can say now. by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia. Is it possible making money blogging?

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

Making money by only blogging has been a dreamed job for many active bloggers. There are many success stories which depict how professional bloggers make money up to four thousand US dollar a day. It is spectacular story. I also want to make money by writing articles and upload them on my blogs hoping that I can also get my share of the online monetization. In reality, when I began writing articles, I found that it is not easy at all to make money that way.

I have been a blogger since last year. It is a really exited experience. I can have contacts with people from around the world. I even meet some of them when they come to visit me. Personally, I like visiting blogs run by John Chow and Joel Comm or a blog called Problogger.com. These professional full time bloggers provide lots of information to their readers on how to increase traffic and make money online.

So far I have been able to reach more than two hundred US dollars from my website. I am quite happy but I think that it is not enough. I still cannot fully make a living just by blogging.

As an alternative, I run an online store where I offer books published in Indonesia. I can make more than one million rupiahs this month it means making money online can be done if we know the way.

Selling products and services or just writing articles online can be a gold mine for anybody who is really serious in trying to make a living from an online business.

How much do I really get from my online business? Honestly it is still very little compared to my off line business which can make up to 3,000 US dollar selling this month. So, my online business is only another channel of outlet to my offline business. I sell books from my home based bookstore and at the same time, I sell books through my online bookstore.

Maybe my experience is not suitable to your condition. You need to find ways which you can use to harmonize your offline and online business so that they support each other. This is my suggestion if you intend to make money online. Blogging is only one of many alternatives.

How I make money from my hobby

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

Everybody can make money from his or her hobby. Whether it is about swimming, building mini train or drawing, making money from it can be a profitable business. So many people do not realize that they can get a lot of money just by turning their hobby into a money making machne.

I like writing. It is a hobby that I do every day. I think it is not difficult job. I write about everything from about my daily life to complicated articles such as designing a ship with flagship; and delftship and tutorials on how to design a house using Archicad.

How much do I make from writing? Well, so far I only publish my English articles on the internet. I haven't sent them to publishers. For articles that I wrote in Bahasa Indonesia, I send them to Intisari and Flona. I get 350 thousand rupiahs or around 35 US dollars per article. It is a suitable honorarium in Indonesia. Besides, I become famous from writing.

Maybe your hobby is drawing figures. Why don't you try to make money from it? Is it difficult making money from drawing? Well, you can start by taking a commission from your neighbor who asks you to draw his or her son. Then, take pictures of your drawings and publish them on the internet. You will be able to attract more online customers from your hobby. Is it that simple? Yes. You'll know more if you have involved in your money making hobby. Why you don’t make money blogging yet other people do?

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

It is a common question when you wonder why you can't make money from your blog. I also used to face that kind of problem. I cannot make money from my blog in a single month. I was very upset at the time thinking of giving up trying to make money from this blog. Then, I visited blogs run by super blogger such as Problogger, Joel Comm and John Chow. I also visited a blog run by a woman named Paula Neil Mooney.

I realized that they work so hard to attract visitors to their blogs. I read their suggestions on how to increase traffic. I apply them to some of my blogs. Finally, I can make money from them, not big but enough to cover my internet expenses.

The followings are some of my suggestions to increase traffic to your blogs:

Update your blog regularly

Yes, in order to increase the number of visits in your blog, you need to write at least one article a day. More visits mean more chance for you to make money online. I do write at least one article a day.

Quality content to improve SEO

It is better to write only certain topics in your blog. If you know many things about orchid, focus the content of your blog on things related to orchid. If you want to write articles about how to make money online then keep on writing about this topic in your blog.

Create your own community

This is one thing that many people do not pay attention. If you visit blogs run by super-bloggers, you will see that they provide an email form in their blogs to invite their visitors to become members of their blog. This is very important thing. They don't need to inform their blog visitors one by one. What they do is really effective. When they have updated their blog, all of the email community will receive an email of notification.

The above three points of suggestions are only some of many factors which you need to know to increase the traffic of your blog thus making more money from it. Try them, if you see improvement in your monthly revenue, don't forget to inform me right away. Is blogging only about making money?

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

Many people still think that bloggers blog to make money. Well, it is not fully right yet not fully wrong. You blog because you want to express your ideas, you want to share your stories. In doing that things you spend time writing or recording videos. This time can be a valuable resource that gives you significant income if you work on a conventional 9 to 5 job system.

I do make a lot of money through my bookstore. But I haven't been able to make a lot of money online just from blogging. I still need more time and perseverance to realize my dream of making huge amount of money just from blogging. I write blog because it is a hobby. A hobby should not be a burden. It should be something that you do with passion no matter how much you have spent. That's what I do. Although I put Google Adsense as a monetization way in my blog, I am not sad when I don't receive significant income from it.

I don't care if I cannot make money from blogging. What I do at the present moment is continue writing, or continue blogging. I don't actually realize that when I regularly update my blog, the number of visitors in my blog has been rising significantly. It is something that many people forget. If your blog is active then people will like to visit it every day.

I like wordpress but so far wordpress.com does not allow any monetization program in its members' blogs. So, the best alternative should be blogger.com or blogspot. I feel that blogger provides a lot of space for its members' blog. They write as many articles as they like, they can save videos or pictures in their blogs and they can import posts from their other blogs into their blogspot blog.

When you are quite successful in blogging, you will be famous. You will have a lot of friends, you will be considered as an expert in one subject that you are writing about. You can also of course make money. So, once again, I want to remind you that if you blog, consider it as your way of expressing or sharing your ideas and stories with other people. Don't burden yourself with a target of making it as a gold mine or money making machine. When you don't see blogging as a burden, then you will be able to blog better. Making money from home business and the internet

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

You can make money by combining your home based business with the internet one. Suppose to say that you are a carpenter who makes chair, table and some children toys made of wood. So far you have made substantial amount of income from that business. During the economic down turn like at the present moment, your revenue from the home bused business is going down. You get worried and intend to get more income by trying to enter an online business.

There are many ways to make money online. I will try to explain some of them here.

Sign up to ebay or Alibaba.com

This is the fastest way to make money buy selling your products online. When you sign up to ebay or alibaba.com, you will get a space where you can display your products to millions of people around the world who have become members of the respective business portal. When there is a customer interested in the products that you offer on your ebay or alibaba account, they will contact you. You need to offer your products in prices that are affordable to your customers. The possibility of other carpenters to offer similar products with cheaper price is big. You need to compete with them. Making money from ebay and alibaba.com is easy. You don't have to become expert in html or other internet programming language. All you need to do is signing up to those business portals and display your products in them. That's all.

Making money from your blog

This is another possibility of making money online. This is more suitable to those who can write short article explaining the advantage that customers can get if they buy your products. You can also explain how it is assembled or disassembled. Blog is my way of promoting my home business bookstore online. It runs well and I am able to sell books worth up to one million rupiahs this month.

Make money by launching your own online store

If you are serious with making money online, you can try setting up an online store. It is not difficult but it needs patience and perseverance. You can begin with contacting a webhosting company. Ask them if they have a webhosting package which has been installed with shopping cart software such as zencart or os commerce. If they have you can buy a domain name and pay the annual web hosting package for less than one hundred dollars. When you have finished paying and setting up your online store for instance furnitureworld.com then the next step that you need to do is taking pictures of your products and inputting them with the price and data of specification into your online store. Your online store should become another outlet for your home business.

Email list

This is one of the great ways which you can use to inform your friends or colleagues about products that you sell. You don't need to set up a website. Nowadays, you can set up your email list using yahoogrups or google groups. They are free and capable of serving thousands of members.

Well, these are some of my suggestions to you if you are interested in running an online business that supports your home based business. You can do your own research on the internet if you think it is needed before deciding on entering the online world. Also read: My first foreign customer and How to expand your home business

Make money by monetizing your blog

Blogs have been money making machines for serious and professional bloggers. They make more 10,000 US dollars by blogging. How can they make such a lot of money from this blog without selling any single product? The answer is simple: they make money by monetizing their blog. What does monetizing mean? Well, it is a kind of advertisement provided by companies such as Google, Kontera or Adbrite to bloggers.

Every time a blog visitor clicks one of the ads displayed in a blog, the owner of the blog will get some money from it. If within one day your blog receive 1,000 visitors and 100 hundred of them then you will get around 20 US dollars for one click is 0.2 US dollars. This is just a rough estimation. I cannot give you an exact figure of the price of one click. It depends on the keyword that you target.

I personally make some money from my nature lover blog. I monetize it with Google Adsense and Amazon. It is not easy actually to raise or make money from blogs. You have to become serious bloggers who write every time.

Google Adsense so far is my best monetization program. The ads it presents on my blogs and website are very relevant to the content. Actually, It is not Google that write the ads, it is the advertisers themselves. How it works? The ads are written by advertisers who buy the traffic to their website by offering keywords through such program as Google Adwords. The keywords or individual or group words used by Google users in doing the search on Google search engine. Although Google has been my largest internet money making machine, it is not the only monetization program available on the internet. There are many other programs such as Kontera, Adbrite, Amazon Associate and etc which you can apply to monetize your blog. You need to visit each of their website to assess the advantage and disadvantage which they offer. by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia. Can I make money from facebook?

Directly making money from facebook? I don't think so. Facebook is only a social networking portal which you can use to share your opinions and ideas with your friends. But, you can post your articles on its wall. Your thoughts are displayed as notes from you where your friends and other members of facebook can read them.

Providing link to your money making blog

But you can make money from your blog. The only way for you to make more money is by giving the link of your blog in your facebook. Your friends will be able to click your blog from the facebook. Facebook is very effective in attracting thousands of visitors to your blog. You just need to be active in updating your facebook and inviting your friends to be part of the facebook. Even high level politicians are members of the facebook.

Another way which you can do to promote your blog through facebook is by writing notes on the wall with links in the wall that connects the readers of facebook to your blog. Suppose that you have a blog in blogger where you write about anything related to your pet. When you write a note on your facebook wall, make some links that refer to your blog. The easiest way is by importing posts from your blog into your facebook. Can you understand what I mean? So, this is a very effective technique which you can apply both to your blog and your facebook. I don't think if it violates terms of service of both facebook and blogger.com.

Write good quality content

Just because you have so many articles in your blog does not mean that your will get a lot of visitors. That's a different story. You need to be a professional writer. Write articles that are easy to be read but contain informative articles.

Be active in inviting friends to your facebook

This is another important strategy which you need to apply in your facebook. Besides actively writing posts in your facebook, you need to actively invite people to become members of your facebook. The higher the number of people in your facebook, the higher will be the clicks into your blog. by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia. Make money by creating an online forum

I used to read Joel Comm book which explains who to make money by creating a blog. I believe that his explanations do make sense. When we are quite successful in developing the forum and inserting some Google Adsense code into it, we will get some money from the clicks which the forum members make during their discussions with other members of the forum.

How to make a forum

The basic reason to make a forum is to create a special room for people with similar interest on certain issue where they can use it as a discussion room or conference room. It means your that your forum is highly specialized on certain topic, for instance, you create a forum on Growing Orchid, or you set up a forum for readers of Paulo Coelho novels. There, people will only discuss things related to Orchid and Novels. How about if you want to make a forum which is focused on sharing ideas on making money online? Well, you can create it. Don't worry, as long as it is good and contains good content, many people will like to join it.

There are a number of forum suites which you can install into your website. The easiest way is to buy a domain name and rent a space from web hosting company that provides a complete package such as fantastico. In fantastico, you can create a highly interactive blog, forum, mailing list, bulletin board or even an online store. Fantastico has feature that you can use to create a highly interactive forum. I used to create one, but due to the limited space in my website, I have to delete or uninstall it again.

What should I do if my forum does not have a lot of members?

Simple, just promote it in your facebook, website, mailing list or blog. The more active you promote your forum to other people the higher will be the chance for you to get a lot of members or visitors to your blog.

Forum is a great place for people to share ideas. You need to be very careful in managing it. Don't let anybody write topics that are outside the target topic. by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia. Is making money by blogging easy?

I make money by blogging but I don't think that it is easy. It is a suitable home business at the present moment. When people cannot make money by working at their 9 to 5 working system, they will find that blogging can be a suitable alternative for them.

There are a number of blogging platforms which you can use such as blogspot or blogger.com, wordpress.org and typepad. I see that most professional bloggers prefer to use wordpress with their own domain name and web hosting. If you rent a web space from a webhosting company that provides fantastic, you will be able to use wordpress. I am quite familiar with this platform. It is simple and powerful in handling dynamic blog. Besides it is also good in terms of Search Engine Optimization or SEO.

Just because you can write articles and post them on to your blog, it does not mean that you can make money easily. You need to promote it, you need to write regularly, and most importantly, you need to be able to create your own e-mail list or community where you can notify every member of the list that you have just updated your blog.

In other words, blogging is easy but making money by blogging is a totally different story. You need to learn from the professional on how they monetize their blog and how they increase their traffic.

If you are interested in reading stories and tips from this professional bloggers, you can visit blogs such as Problogger, Joel Comm, John Chow and Paula Neil Mooney. These are some of the blogs which I visit regulary. I see that most of the professional bloggers provide downloadable ebook which you can download to learn more about making money from blogging.

Diving Boat General Arrangement Consideration

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

dive-boat.jpgAs naval architects, we usually begin our project design with calculations. We tend to focus more of our attention on principal dimensions such as type of ship or boat, the length overall, breadth moulded, depth moulded and prismatic and block coefficient. It is true that such principal dimensions are needed by the ship or boat designer to carry out detailed calculations including the resistance, propulsion, structural strength and the cost of construction.

A boat type which needs special design consideration from naval architects is diving boat. Diving boat is used by scuba divers in various marine parks around the world for accessing the coral reef. Most of the corals are located in shallow sea water. Therefore, when naval architects want to design the boats, they need to consider some important factors below:

The depth of boat

Because the diving boat operates in shallow water the depth of the boat should not more than five meters. It is better to have a smaller depth so that the hull bottom, keel and the propeller will not hit coral reef.

Twin hull or catamaran

In recent days, naval architects have introduced twin hull design for diving boat. This is a very good breakthrough for safe operation of the diving boat in the marine protected areas. Besides twin hull boat or catamaran has smaller depth moulded, it also has better stability. Catamaran can go to coral reef whose depth from the sea surface is around or less than 3 meters.

Wider deck area

A diving boat needs a wider deck area which is needed by dive operators for the placement of air bottles, compressor. A wider deck area means better movement for the divers to move around.

Diving platform

This is a lower deck which is constructed at the back of the diving boat or yacht which scuba divers use to climb to the boat. Usually there is a small stair which connects the diving platform with the main deck

Small freeboard

Most diving boats have small freeboard with ladder installed on both sides of the boat. After diving, scuba divers can come up to the surface and climb the boat from port or starboard side of the boat.

Diving is a fun yet dangerous sport. Naval architects need to design a room in the boat which can be used as an "emergency hospital" in case of accidents at sea. Divers can become victims of shark. Therefore, adequate first aid equipment is needed in the boat beside the diving equipment.

There are still more factors such as the sewage system and propulsion unit which I need to explain in this article but I think I should write them in another article. Also read: Designing Lines Plan with Fastship and Fastship and Delftship for Naval Architects

Position of crew room on traditional fishing boat

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

17089.JPGNaval architects who design fishing boats frequently have to face many conflicting factors. Fishermen in Europe like to have a wide deck area to enable them to work freely during operation. The superstructure of fishing boat is therefore positioned by ship designers at the forward end of the boat. As a compromise, the rooms for the crews are positioned below the main deck next to the fish hold.

In the contrary, fishermen in Indonesia and Malaysia prefer to have crew rooms and their kitchen on the main deck. As a result the size of the superstructure is bigger and occupies more than sixty percent of the main deck area of the fishing boat. For instance, if the proposed design of LOA is 12 meters with the breadth of 3.6 meters then the deck area of the boat will be around twenty square meters.

A new approach has to be given to new fishing boat designs in Indonesia and Malaysia where working area for the fishermen on the main deck needs to be enlarged. For a traditional fishing boat with four crews, at least two beds for the crews have to be removed from the main deck to the lower deck whereas the kitchen can still be maintained as it has been a traditional custom for the fishermen in Indonesia to have wet kitchen. The new fishing boat design should have at least fifty percent working area for the fisherman to improve their working condition and to allow for more fishing equipment to be installed on the main deck.

In addition, wood which has been the traditional material for boat building in Indonesia can still be used with some introduction of Fiber Reinforced Plastics or FRP materials on the superstructure and joints of the watertight bulkheads that divide main body the fishing boat into engine room, fish hold and crew room.

It is hoped that the new approach on the design of the general arrangement of the fishing boat will improve the productivity of the traditional fishermen in Indonesia. Also read: Super-tanker and the risk of oil spill at sea and Designing Lines Plan with Fastship

Super-tanker and the risk of oil spill at sea

23248.JPGSuper tankers have been part of oil trading since 1960s. They are responsible for delivering oil and gas from refineries or producing facilities to other ports around the world. The competition among companies and the increasing demand for oil and gas has been the driving force for the increasing size of the oil carriers.
Frequently these supertankers besides having to cross large oceans such as the Pacific and the Atlantic, they have to pass by narrow yet busy straits and ports. The availability of modern navigational equipment does not guarantee that the supertankers will be free from any risk of collision with other smaller ships or boats. It is the ships' crews who have to safely guard their ships to the unloading ports. Last year, there was a tanker accident in South Korea. Oil spill from this tanker caused huge environmental damage to the coral reef, the sea, the beach as well as the fisherman villages near the area of the accident. Early this year, a cargo vessel loaded with Portland cements, and full with fuel oil in its tanks, collided with a tug boat in Jakarta bay of Indonesia. The vessel sank and spill fuel oil into the sea. Some crews lost their lives. While beach clean up can be done immediately, the destruction in the coral reef environment takes tens or even hundreds of years to recover.
Naval architects, when designing, oil tanker are guided with rules from classification societies, marpol and state regulations. They usually design tankers that have several sections or cargo holds. Collision bulkhead is also drawn at the forward end of the ship. In addition, they also provide double bottom to ensure that the tankers are still safe in case of experiencing grounding. Double bottom, collision bulkhead and double hull are not fully safe in protecting the supertankers during incidents of collision or grounding. When a supertanker experiences severe damage on its collision bulkhead, cofferdam, and double bottom, it will definitely spill oil into the sea.
Another way that we can do to reduce the negative impact of oil spill at sea is to limit the size of supertanker. It is not wise to just follow the request of ship owner by designing 500,000 tons supertanker. Size restriction is needed to ensure that the tankers that we design will not cause massive pollution in busy ports or straights.

West Papua needs to develop its agriculture

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

One of the visitors of my blog visited me this morning. His name is Jay Hersker. He is from Hawaii. I am personally quite familiar with the word Hawaii. It is where the University of Manoa is located. That campus has department of naval architecture where students from around the world go there to study off-shore engineering supported by ADB and East West Center.

Jay Hersker has been travelling across South East Asia for years. He went to Thailand, Malaysia and now he is in Indonesia. In his opinion, Thailand's development of agriculture is impressive. Thai people can export their surplus of fruit and rice to many countries. In their traditional markets, there are various kinds of fruits sold by vendors.

I and my friend Sylvester Saimar talked with him about sago and varieties of palm trees which are endemic in West Papua. Jay said that he wants to visit Papua University to see their Herbarium. The university also publishes a journal called Beccariana. Although this island has a good agriculture educational institution like Unipa, the agricultural development in West Papua is far from being advanced. More works need to be done to develop the agricultural sector of West Papua.

Creating a rounded corner wall with Archicad 12

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

Graphisoft's new release of Archicad 12 has been a great tool for architects who find that this software has helped them a lot in their daily works. Archicad 12 provides various new features such as curtain wall, hotlink module management and 3D document and etc. Anyone who has studied the fundamentals of building technology can design their own house using this software.

In this article, I am going to explain how to create a rounded corner wall with Archicad 12. Home owners some time ask their designers to round one of the wall corners of their new house which is usually the front one. To design a rounded corner, make two walls by clicking the wall tools on the tool box located on the left of your window screen. Then, one the working sheet, draw a vertical wall and a horizontal wall.

archicad-wall.jpg

After drawing vertical and horizontal walls that form a corner wall, then proceed to drawing the round wall by clicking the use three points rounded wall, click and the outer ends of the walls. When you have clicked the two ends, Archicad will show a circle with a radius showing how the rounded corner wall will look like.

archicad-corner-wall.jpg

You need to make adjustments to the length and radius of the rounded wall so that you can connect the two horizontal and vertical walls. When you have finished making the adjustments, then you can press enter. Archicad wil show you an image similar to the one below. Make sure that the corner radius is not larger or smaller than it should be. You can see the final image of your wall in 3D if you select the view in 3D feature provided by Archicad 12 in view menu.

Fastship and Delftship for Naval Architects

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

delftship-hull.jpgI have just downloaded a ship's hull development software called Delftship. This software is developed for naval architects who are working on ship design offices or students of naval architecture around the world. In my previous article, I said that I use Fastship to develop ship's hull. Fastship is made by Proteus Engineering while Delfship is by Delftship BV in the Netherlands.

Personally, the word Delft is a familiar word for me. It is the town where Delft University of Technology is located. This institution is very famous in my campus when I was a student of Teknik Perkapalan of Universitas Pattimura Ambon. My final assignment was the propeller design of a giant open hatch bulk carrier. I had to read books related to Ship's propulsion. One of the books which I used as my main reference was "Resistance, Propulsion and Steering of Ships." Although it is a very old book, I consider it as a very important book which students of naval architecture should read to widen their knowledge on ship design. The propeller data which is presented in the book is still valid at the moment. I used Troost B4-BP-d Series whereas the resistance is calculated using a method developed by J. Holtrop and G.G. J.Mennen.

Back to the hull development softwares, the availability of the free Delftship has given great opportunities to students of naval architecture around the world to experience an industry standard development of hull form at their own PC or laptops. Software companies which offer such scheme have indirectly promoted their software to young engineers who in the future will become professional ship designers and decision makers in maritime industry in their respective countries.

I will write more about these two softwares in the near future. In Fastship, besides it is a lines-plan software, it can calculate the resistance of ship. How about Delfship? Well, its manual says that it can calculate the GZ curve, stability curve, bending moment and shear force of a ship.

Designing Lines Plan with Fastship

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

fast-ship-naval-architectur.jpgAs a naval architect, I have always found difficulties in manually delineating lines plan of a ship or a boat. Calculating the principle dimensions of a ship is easy. But delineating them on a lines plan drawing is a tedious task. While I was studying Naval Architecture (Teknik Perkapalan) in Pattimura University of Ambon city in Maluku islands, I did not have any lines plan drawing software at all. This is the biggest obstacle which most students of naval architecture faced. I think it still happen in my campus. Ship design software is still expensive for students of naval architecture in Teknik Perkapalan of Pattimura University.

In the past, most of naval architects will be very anxious if after presenting their design to ship owner, he or she would be asked for making some hull modification. The lengthening, shortening or trimming of a ship's hull will directly affect the whole coordinates of body-plan, waterlines and sections of a planned ship. Even a slight modification in the hull form will force a naval architect to recalculate the displacement, block coefficient, prismatic coefficient and water resistance of a ship and of course the internal general arrangement of a ship .

The reassessment or recalculation of ship resistance will affect the effective power of a ship and the type of engine that will be selected by the ship designer. Today's naval architect can make alterations of ship' hull in just a few clicks on a computer screen without having to spend many nights redrawing the lines plan and general arrangement of the modified ship.

I have downloaded a lines-plan development software from the internet. Its name is Fastship Software. It is developed by Proteus Engineering. There are many similar softwares available on the internet. One of them is Delfship or formerly known as Freeship. Many ship design software companies provide free trial software on the internet. I see this as a good offer to students of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering who are trying to design ships which are asked from them by their lecturers. I hope that most ship design software development companies will provide special offer to Naval Architecture educational institution which can be downloaded for free.

As a comparison, Graphisoft, a company that designs Archicad for home designer or architects provide their software for free for educational purposes. By doing this, the company has promoted its products to wider users expecting that in the future these new architects will keep on using their software in full version and full price.

Houses in Earthquake zone

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

wooden-house-minahasa.jpgHouses that are built in active earthquake zone must possess high modulus of elasticity to withstand the ground movement. Usually for traditional houses, people use wood as the framework of their houses. Wood although strong and elastic in nature is combustible. Therefore, for modern building, walls are built from concrete whereas the wood pillars are covered with concrete or other non-combustible materials to prevent them from getting burned during a fire accident.

In tropical region, wood is one of the most favorite home building materials. Besides it is strong enough to support the dead and live loads of the building, wood can stabilize the indoor temperature of the house. Unfortunately, special design concept and wood treatment have to be applied to wooden houses to prevent them from being wholly consumed by the termite.

Earthquakes are mostly tectonic and volcanic. When a volcano erupts, it will release sulphur ash that is corrosive to metal roof. In Indonesia, villagers use earth roof tile or palm leaves as roofing materials. They are resistant to sulphur ash. Palm leaves are called daun atap or atap rumbia. They need to be replaced by new ones every three or five years. Sometimes during the rainy season, the owner of the house has to insert some new palm leaves to mend the leaks. Palm leaves as roofing material is very combustible. It is not recommended to be applied in big cities due to many electrical lines running near the roofs of the houses.

Houses that are constructed in earthquake zone are usually reinforced by the application of steel frames inside the concrete walls to prevent them from bending and fail during an earthquake.

In addition, the height of the walls which are normally 3.5 meters will be reduced to between 2.8 and 3.0 meters to minimize the risk of failure during the earthquake. Reducing the height of the walls will create an impression of hot in tropical houses. As a solution, many homes in quake zones have many windows that are reinforced with wood to support the dead loads of the wall and roof structure.

If I have to choose between wood and steel as reinforcing materials for home, I will choose wood. Also read: Archicad and Revit for House Design

Recommended book for home building technology

by Charles Roring in Manokwari of West Papua - Indonesia

fundamental-building-techno.jpgI have been reading books about house design and construction since early this month. I found that the construction practices that the Indonesian home builders have are different from the ones in Europe. Many of the houses in Indonesia have good openings to allow air circulate inside all rooms of the houses. Houses in Indonesia are located in tropical region that is hot and full of moisture. Besides, the houses are exposed to frequent rain during rainy season. Therefore, the design of the houses in this country stipulates that the houses are resistant to wet climate condition with good ventilation to keep the rooms cool during the day.

Actually the theory of home design in Indonesia is much influenced by home building theory in Europe particularly the Netherlands. Unfortunately, I cannot understand Dutch. I prefer to read home building books that are printed in English. At the moment, there are many books about home design and construction available on the internet which anybody can download. One of them which I recommend to you is Fundamental Building Technology. It was written by Taylor and Francis. The followings are Table of Contents of this book:

1. Introduction to building technology

2. Site investigation and the type of ground

3. Excavation

4. Foundations
