Raja Ampat Adventure Tour for Nature Lovers

Uninhabited Island
Raja Ampat is the most beautiful tourist destination in the world. If you are interested in having fun at empty islands, I could be your guide ;-)
Raja Ampat is the best destination in the world for marine tourism. As a tourist guide, I have organized tours for visitors who want to explore the bio-diversity of tropical rainforest and coral reef of the islands. There are a number of activities which visitors can enjoy while taking the adventure tours that I offer.
Tours to Empty Islands
There are hundreds of islands in Raja Ampat. Most of the big ones are inhabited but many small ones are uninhabited. We will go to these empty islands and enjoy swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and walking tour. Fishing or spearfishing, and grilling fresh fish at the beach will be done at islands whose waters are not protected.
underwater world of Raja Ampat
The coral reef of Isanak beach, for example, is the natural habitat of anemone fish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, turtles, moorish idol, sea star, and a lot of other fish and marine creatures. We could spend overnight stay in the island using portable tents.
We will use flashlight or torch at night. Visitors can also enjoy fishing or just enjoy the beauty of the night by sitting around campfire at night.
In addition to seeing the beauty of the coral reef and tropical fish of the islands, we could also do birdwatching. Birds such as Brahminy Kite, Sunbird, Tern, Booby, Black Noddy, Plover, Frigate. To enhance birding experience, we provide binoculars for visitors.

River forest in Waigeo island
Birdwatching Adventure in River Forest of Waigeo Island
Waigeo is one of the 4 big islands of Raja Ampat. The other three are Batanta, Salawati, and Misool. The easiest way to explore forest is by going through a river. By doing so, we will be able to reach deeper area of the forest. We can build tents at the bank of the river and spend one night in the jungle before going hiking and watching Red of Paradise (Paradisaea rubra) the next morning. The forest of Waigeo island is also the natural habitat of Papuan Blyth's Hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus), Pink-spotted Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus perlatus), Sulphur Crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), Rufous-bellied Kookaburra (Dacelo gaudichaud) and a lot more.

Visiting Villages
We will also visit some coastal villages in Raja Ampat to see how local people live in their daily life. Most of the islanders work as fishermen and farmers. Some work as government employees. Fishermen catch groupers, sea cucumbers, and collect.

Adventure Tour in Raja Ampat

Adventure in Raja Ampat
I have just completed a five-day adventure tour in north-east region of Raja Ampat islands with three visitors from India. We went snorkeling at Isanak beach. We camped at the bank of Mamdifu river and explored the forest to watch birds such as the Red Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea rubra), Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus), Blyth's Hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus), Pink-spotted Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus perlatus).
Fish Lagoon in Raja Ampat
The coral reef at Isanak beach was very beautiful and was the natural habitat of a lot of species of fish including butterfly fish, grouper, moorish idol, stingray, and anemonefish. One the second day, we had barbecue at the beach of an empty island where we grilled at ate fresh fish that were caught by our local guides. Squids, grouper, butterflyfish and red snapper became our lunch that day. Our local guides caught them by fishing and shooting.
Visiting Villages and Meeting Local People
Local villagers were very friendly to us. During the adventure tour, we visited several coastal villages in Waigeo island and stayed in the houses of local people. They were happy to receive us. We had the opportunity to walk around the villages and to see how people live in their daily life. Most of the villagers were fishermen. They caught fish, lobster and sea cucumber and sold them in Sorong city.
Fish Lagoon
Boat that brought us to visit islands
One of the most important destinations in our tour was Laguna Ikan (meaning Fish Lagoon). There were a number of karst islets that formed a protected waters for fish and fishermen. The lagoon was very beautiful. I and the Indian tourists went hiking to the top of one of the islands in the lagoon to see and make pictures of its landscape.
Hiking and Birding
In addition to snorkeling, and doing village tours, we made several trips into the tropical rainforest of Waigeo island. We did this to watch birds. Some birds that I recognized were Mountain Peltop, Yellow-bellied Sunbird, and Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, and Rainbow Bee-eater (Merops ornatus). We did hiking and birdwatching trips early in the mornings and in late afternoons. We walked along the road that had just been constructed by local government to connect coastal villages in Waigeo. The road was still empty - no cars and motorcycles around. Most of the villagers use motorized boats to travel from one village to another.
Tidal Sandbar at sea in Raja Ampat
The north-east region of Raja Ampat has not been famous as tourist destination. There were no guesthouses or beach resorts in the area. Visitors have to stay in the villagers houses or built tents at white sandy beaches of empty islands or at the side of a river in the jungle.
Watching Red Bird of Paradise
We spent 1 night camping in the jungle to watch Red Bird of Paradise. The night when we were in the jungle, it rained a lot. We had to move to higher ground to avoid the rising water level from a flooding river. The next morning, we were able to see Red Bird of Paradise and other birds. We still did some birding in the village and were able to see starlings, sulphur crested cockatoos, yellow-bellied sunbird and kingfishers.

After that you could fly from Jakarta to Sorong city. There are regular daily flight provided by such domestic airlines as Garuda, Xpress Air, Sriwijaya, Batik Air.
I will meet you at the airport and organize your trip to the Fish Lagoon and its surrounding areas.

Transport Vehicle between Raja Ampat and Sorong city
As a way to empower the indigenous Papuan people who live in Raja Ampat islands, we will not use speed-boat from Sorong city. We will use a large motorized wooden boat that is owned by Raja Ampat villager. It takes approximately 2.5 hours of boat ride from Sorong city to the Fish Lagoon.

Accommodation
Fish Lagoon, the nearby islands and the coastal villages in north east of Raja Ampat are not located in the mainstream tourist destination of the archipelago. Coastal Birds of Raja Ampat

When I went to Raja Ampat last week, I visited a lot of coastal area of the eastern region of Waigeo. White sandy beach, small tropical islands, coconut trees and mangrove forest are the typical scenery of most Raja Ampat areas. In addition to swimming and snorkeling, I also did some birding where I saw several species of coastal birds.
Plover birds in Waim island
Plover in Waim Island
In Waim island, I saw a group of plover birds that was walking on the sand, perhaps they were feeding on small fish or beach worm of the island. I used my digital camera to shoot those birds. It was a Fujifilm Finepix HS50EXR. I had to lower my body and walked slowly towards the birds. They were not aware of my presense at first. But later when they saw me, they cautiously began to walk away from me. I was able to make some shots of the birds. They did not fly away because, I tried not to intimidate them by just walking slowly.
Radjah Shelduck
Tadorna Radjah at the beach of Waigeo Island
At the beach of Waigeo island, I also saw a group of Radjah Shelduck that was also walking at the beach. They were quite fast to follow. I had to use the optical zoom of my camera to shoot the birds. It was during the sunset time with the sun was already at the back of the island and there was only a little light for me to shoot the birds. I had to use Aviary photo editor to brighten the picture of these Radjah Shelduck.
Crested Tern in Raja Ampat archipelago
Tern at the sea
Other coastal birds that I saw in east Raja Ampat islands were tern. I think they were Crested Tern. They were sitting on wooden frames that were constructed at sea for fishermen to catch fish. Because I was sitting inside a moving boat, I could not make sharp pictures of the birds. I also saw kingfisher at the branch of a tree at the entrance of the lagoon but I could not shoot the bird with my camera. The boat that took me to the Fish Lagoon was moving quite fast.
Pacific Swallow
Pacific Swallow near Fish Lagoon
This bird was small compared to the birds that I mentioned above. I had the opportunity to shoot the bird near the Fish Lagoon. Coastal birds or sea birds like to use jetty, tree branches above the sea water or man-made structres that were built in shallow waters as their sitting platform.
Forest Birds in Waigeo Island
I saw significant number of forest birds while hiking in the jungle of Waigeo island. Some of them include Papuan hornbill, western black capped lory, eclectus parrot and brahminy kite.

The scenery of east Raja Ampat region
Birding and Snorkeling Tour in Raja Ampat

The activities during the tour will include visiting small tropical islands in the region where visitors could see pristine coral reef environment and tropical fish and hiking in the rainforest of Waigeo island to see birds, trees, flowers and butterflies.
I highly recommend that visitors who want me to guide them to east Raja Ampat region to travel in a group of at least 4 to 6 people to share the cost.

I enjoyed snorkeling at Isanak beach, I walked around Sopen village, and watched Red Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea rubra) in Wararaf forest, I saw a lot of fish and beautiful coral reef at DPL beaches. Snorkeling and Hiking Tour in Raja Ampat

I have just finished a snorkeling and hiking tour in Raja Ampat islands. It was a great trip because I was able to see beautiful coral reef that is rich of tropical fish and Red Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea rubra) in the rainforest of the archipelago.
The Front Waters of Fish Lagoon
I did not go to the main stream tourist destination such as Kri, Mansuar, Gam, Arborek, Pianemo and Wayag islands. I went to such places as Isanak beach, DPL reef, Wararaf forest and explored Fish Lagoon karst islets. That's why I did not see any tourists around. Most of the places that I visited have not been mentioned in the Lonely Planet guide book. I was satisfied with this adventure trip.
Charles Roring (in the middle) with local people at a beach in Raja Ampat
White sandy beach, coconut and mangrove trees, coral reef and tropical fish,  islanders, and boats were the typical words that we would hear when visiting Raja Ampat.
Unconventional Destination
As a tourist guide, I could organize tours for single traveling tourist or a group of visitors who want to visit Raja Ampat particularly to destinations that are not in the mainstream target of tourists. Because the places that we are going to visit are totally new to tourism, we will not find hotels, homestay or guesthouses. If we decide to stay in remote empty islands, we will have to bring tents and food supplies. We could enjoy swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, catching fish and grilling it fresh at white sandy beach. We can have fun in empty islands during the tour. After that we could go to the villagers and stay with them.
White sandy beach in Raja Ampat archipelago
Hiking, Birding and Wildlife Watching
In addition to swimming, snorkeling or sunbathing, I can also organize jungle tour where we can walk un the forest to see its tropical plants, large trees, and Red Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea rubra), Cockatoo, Pigeons, and colorful butterflies.
Red Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea rubra) in Raja Ampat Forest
Cost of the Tour
Traveling to this unconventional destination of Raja Ampat is quite expensive because there is no regular public ferry service. Visitors/ tourists who are interested in taking the tour is highly advised to travel in a group of at least 4 to 10 people to share the cost. However, there is tourist who prefers to have private tour, I would be happy to organize the trip too.
Or if you are a solo traveling tourist who wants me to accompany you during your tour to Raja Ampat, I could guide you to more affordable destinations such as Kri, Mansuar, Waigeo, or Gam island.
Tour Duration
On the average the tour duration can be as short as 3 to 6 days. Your trip in West Papua could be extended to land tour where you could enjoy hiking in the Klasow valley to watch paradise birds, cassowary, butterflies and wallaby.

Booking
I could prepare a customized itinerary and cost for you. Please, contact me (Charles Roring) by e-mail to: peace4wp@gmail.com or send text/ whatsapp message to my cell phone +6281332245180

Coral reef in Manokwari
Scuba Diving
In addition to snorkeling, upon special request, the staff of Doreri Guesthouse can arrange a diving trip for visitors who are interested in seeing shipwrecks and coral reef environment both in the island and other areas of Manokwari waters.

Nature Walk
Besides enjoying snorkeling and scuba diving in Manokwari, visitors can also do jogging, nature walk and birdwatching or butterfly watching around Mansinam island. Birds such as willie wagtail, pigeon, kingfisher, frigatebird and various other seabirds can be seen early in the morning.
Government has built a wide concrete track for visitors. The concrete path passes through tropical rainforest that still covers most of the island. The best time to enjoy nature walk is early in the morning when birds are still active. Butterflies usually come out of the forest to find nectar from wild flowers that grow on both sides of the concrete road.
I highly suggest that visitors who want to do nature walk be accompanied by the staff of Doreri Guesthouse.

Visitors who want to enjoy snorkeling and nature walk around the tropical island of Mansinam should stay at least 3 days/ 2 nights to see the coral reef, the forest environment, the villages, and the historical Christians sites of the island.

Hiking and Birding in Lowland Forest of Manokwari

Lowland Forest of Manokwari
Lowland Forest of Manokwari
Birdwatching is an interesting activity. In Manokwari, there are several places that I usually visit to run birding tours. One of them is Menyumfoka river. Tropical rainforest that covers both sides of the river is the natural habitat of a lot of species of birds that live in lowland area. During my last riverwalk in the area, I saw Papuan hornbills (Rhyticeros plicatus), Sulphur Crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), Brahminy Kite, Pinon Imperial Pigeon (Ducula pinon), Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus), and Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus rotatus). Big trees such as ironwood tree, strangler ficus tree and kayu-perahu tree can be seen in the lowland forest.

Birding along the river
To watch birds, I use a pair of binoculars. I also have got a spotting scope and a tripod. I like birding along the bank of a river because I could see birds easily. Huge clearing area created by a river enables birdwatchers to spot birds in distant trees and in the sky.
Birding Camera
I use an old Fujifilm HS50EXR. It has got 42x optical zoom that is equivalent too 1,000 mm. It is a very good camera for birdwatching. Unfortunately, Fujifilm discontinued the development of such camera.
As a tourist guide, I offer hiking and birding tours to lowland forest and montane forest of Manokwari.

Butterfly in Lowland Forest of Manokwari
Other Animals
The Lowland Forest of Manokwari is also the habitat of deers, wallaby, wild pigs, snakes, and a lot of colorful butterflies and beetles.
I made some pictures of mantis and butterfly and I went hiking in the area yesterday.

Camping
The average duration of the hiking and birding tour in the lowland forest of Manokwari is 3 days/ 2 nights. I provide tents, and sleeping bags for tourists so that they don't need to bring camping gear from their country.
